Conceived as a counterpart to SHIZEN: Night, the SHIZEN: Light series brings the city-mountain montages into broad daylight.
Growing up in UK suburbia, I experienced both countryside and the modernist architecture of a postwar new town. This duality — pastoral openness set against urban modernity — shaped my early sense of place.

In Japan, these extremes are amplified: the dense metropolitan expanse of Tokyo exists in close proximity to the rugged mountain ranges of Nagano.
SHIZEN exaggerates this adjacency into a heightened vision of coexistence, where the ultra-modern city and the natural grandeur of the mountains merge into singular, hybrid landscapes.

『市[shi]ZEN:Night』の対になるものとして構想された『市[shi]ZEN:Light』は、都市と山のモンタージュを昼の光のもとに展開します。イギリスの郊外で育った私は、田園風景と、戦後のニュータウンに見られるモダニズム建築の両方を体験しました。この二重性――牧歌的な開放感と都会的な近代性の対比――が、私の場所というものに対する最初の感覚を形づくりました。
日本ではこれらの対極はさらに強調されます。広大な東京の都市圏は、長野の険しい山岳地帯と近接して存在しています。『市[shi]ZEN』ではこの隣接関係を誇張し、より高められた共存のビジョンへと変換します。そこでは、超近代的な都市と山岳の壮大な自然がひとつに溶け合い、独自のハイブリッドな風景を形成しています。
