Memory Vault is a series of composite photographs in which I reimagine Matsumoto Castle in Nagano as a modern, high-tech fortress. Sampling images of skyscrapers from Tokyo’s Nishi-Shinjuku district — buildings that featured prominently in Land of Technology — I clad the castle’s façades with contemporary architectural surfaces while leaving its stone wall and traditional form intact. Set against views of Nagano’s Northern Alps, the series presents one image for each season.
Elements from across my practice are embedded in both the imagery and the methodology. The futuristic metropolis of Tokyo and the mountainous, nature-rich landscape of Nagano are brought together through a compositing process similar to 市[shi]ZEN, while the hybrid castle functions as a metaphorical storage vault for my work, echoing the role of The Phokus Archives and Portal. In this sense, Memory Vault becomes a project of preservation that is both literal and symbolic — a place where city, nature, and technology converge, and where the recurring themes of my practice are visually distilled.
《Memory Vault》 は、長野県・松本城を現代的でハイテクな要塞として再構築した、合成写真シリーズです。
《Land of Technology》で重要なモチーフとなっていた東京・西新宿の高層建築をサンプリングし、城の石垣と伝統的なフォルムはそのままに、天守の外壁に現代建築の表層を重ねています。長野の北アルプスを背景に、四季それぞれを表現した一作品ずつで構成されています。
本シリーズには、これまでの制作に通底する要素が、イメージと手法の両面において埋め込まれています。東京の未来的な高層都市と、長野の山岳的で自然豊かな風景は、《市[shi]ZEN》と共通する合成手法によって結び合わされ、ハイブリッドな城は、かつて《The Phokus Archives》や《Portal》が担っていた役割を想起させる、作品のための比喩的な保存庫として機能します。その意味で 《Memory Vault》 は、文字通りの意味と象徴的な意味の両方において「保存」を主題とするプロジェクトであり、都市・自然・テクノロジーが交差し、私の制作において繰り返し扱ってきたテーマが、視覚的にまとめられた場となっています。
