A commissioned piece for Shiga Kogen Roman Art Museum in Nagano to create a piece of work based around the museum's architecture (designed by Kisho Kurokawa) and incorporate elements of the surrounding nature of Shiga Kogen's National Park.
長野県の志賀高原ロマン美術館からの依頼により、黒川紀章設計による美術館の建築を中心に、周囲の志賀高原国立公園の自然を取り入れて制作した作品。

Production Method
Architecture
The museum's architecture has a round, enclosed layout making it impossible to view all facades at once, so after photographing the building from multiple angles I arranged the images into a linear, panoramic format as shown below.

美術館は円形で閉じた構造になっているため、すべての外観を一度に見ることができません。そこで、建物をさまざまな角度から撮影し、それぞれの画像をつなぎ合わせて、下のような横長のパノラマ形式に構成しました。
Shiga Kogen
I composited these elements into the background, and assembled the museum pieces together into one cohesive building. Sampling the original photograph of the museum path, I created a new central walkway.

次に、笠ヶ岳、澗満滝、木戸池、田ノ原湿原など、志賀高原を代表する自然の風景を撮影しました。これらの要素を背景に合成し、美術館の各部分をつなぎ合わせて、ひとつのまとまりのある建物として構成しました。また、美術館の通路を撮影した元画像から素材を取り出し、新たな中央の通路を作りました。
Retouching
The museum was built in time for the 1998 Winter Olympics which were held in Nagano.
Now nearly 30 years old, the museum's concrete facades, it's roofs and it's conical glass
tower have all weathered and deteriorated over time. I extensively retouched all areas to
restore the museum to it's original state. Below are some before and after comparisons.

この美術館は、長野で開催された1998年冬季オリンピックに合わせて建設されました。建設から約30年が経ち、コンクリートの外壁や屋根、円錐形のガラス塔など、建物の各所には経年による風化や劣化が見られます。そこで、建物全体を大幅にレタッチし、完成当初の状態をイメージして復元しました。以下は、そのレタッチ前とレタッチ後の比較です。

People & Monkeys
To populate the scene I photographed people in a Nagano shopping area and composited them into the view. I also visited the nearby Jigokudani Monkey Park to photograph the Japanese snow monkeys and dotted them around the image. In reality, the monkeys are often spotted outside the museum.

風景に人の存在感を加えるため、長野県内の商業エリアで人々を撮影し、風景の中に合成しました。
また、近くにある地獄谷野猿公苑を訪れ、ニホンザルを撮影して、画面のさまざまな場所に配置しました。実際にも、美術館の外でニホンザルが見られることがあります。
